AâAdrenal glands produce and release the stress hormone cortisol. Cortisolâs main job is to provide energy to fuel your body through a stressful situation. For example, cortisol raises the sugar in your bloodstream to increase the energy available for a stress response. Chronic cortisol release keeps your bodyâs repair and healing processes shut down.
The Hypothalamus
Your hypothalamus oversees your bodyâs stress response by continuously monitoring your blood levels for cortisol and adjusting the resulting signals sent to the body to either produce more or less cortisol. (See this page for more information on the imbalances in the hypothalamus and pituitary.)
When your hypothalamus gets the signal that the right volume of cortisol has been released, it inhibits the signals to produce more cortisol. This is known as a negative feedback loop that works only when accurate feedback is received by your hypothalamus. Chronic and prolonged stress can overstimulate your hypothalamus and compromise its ability to receive clear signals. This can cause the hypothalamus to continue signaling your adrenals to release excessive cortisol. The ongoing release of cortisol then hard-wires stress pathways in your brain, predisposing you to more stress and symptoms like anxiety, depression, postâtraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and other mood disorders.
The healthy function of your hypothalamus determines the healthy function of your adrenals and your ability to manage stress. Essential oils can help reboot the hypothalamus to restore healthy function (see Hypothalamus Blend on this page).
